Headteachers Letter - End of Term 17-12-20

17 December 2020

Dear Parents and Carers

As we approach the end of one of the most challenging years in education that I can remember, I would like to thank you all for your support.  As a special school we all know that our boys need routine, consistency and an environment that feels safe to thrive in.  Little of that has been possible this year and this has brought a huge challenge to you, the boys, all the staff at Langham and the SEAX Trust.  However, we have all worked our way through it and made the best of the time we have had together with some surprisingly positive results.

I am proud to tell you that during this time the school has developed a new curriculum, a new timetable, an improved staffing structure to support the boys and their needs, we have reviewed the funding arrangements for the school, now have an on-line learning platform and we have successfully moved into the new school.

The staff at Langham have worked tirelessly this year to keep you informed and talk to you throughout lockdown, and we have had some lovely feedback from parents about the support provided. Thank you for that, it makes a real difference.

Some boys have found this time more difficult than others and we will continue to work hard in supporting those boys and their families in the new year.  You will have seen a letter from the Trust in recent days regarding Trace information. (See links below)

The boys have returned from lockdown with renewed focus, engaging in learning, showing greater respect and tolerance towards each other and staff; and showing a real appreciation of being in school and spending positive time with staff and the other boys.

The school environment is now of the high quality our boys deserve and the ambience in classrooms and state of the art ICT facilities have consistently helped engage the boys on their return to full time provision.

Please ensure you have read the guidance from the Trust regarding Track and Trace over the festive period.

If you have any safeguarding concerns during the holiday period, I will be available on the following number, which is also posted on the school website. PLEASE only use this number for serious concerns, as I too am hoping to enjoy a break during this time.

As many of you are aware the Residential provision has been closed since the onset of the pandemic, but we are working hard to assess the risks and hope to open a limited residential provision mid-January, IF guidance allows and we believe we can keep everyone safe.

In January we are planning to return to school on Monday 4th January to a normal timetable.  Many of you will be aware of the current escalation in rates of infection, so there maybe additional guidance to schools over the festive period. I will keep you informed if anything changes, otherwise I look forward to seeing al the boys on 4th January.  In the event of any change we will e-mail, send a text, and publish the information on the school website.  So please keep eye out, as you will not be able to ring the school at this time if we are closed.

As we move towards mass testing and vaccines in the new year, I am hopeful that we can ALL celebrate the opening of the new school, invite you to parents’ evenings, celebration assemblies and other shows and events.  By then we will be able to hug our loved ones and friends, shake hands and even blow on a birthday cake and eat it!  Something to look forward to.

Until then, stay safe, stay well, and enjoy the holidays with friends and family where you can.

Best wishes

Simon Dawson
